Der Plan.,\u00a0<\/em>G\u00e1bor Gerhes\u2019s exhibition<\/a>, presents the photo-based works the artist has created in the past thirty years. With the exception of the earliest pieces, Gerhes always focused on visual representation, and language and its relationship to visuality is a recurring interest with him. Working with complex visual systems in mind, he often creates photo-based pieces\u2014which however point beyond the conventional formal idiom of photography.<\/p>\n

Der Plan.\u00a0<\/em>seeks to trace the transformations of his creative thought and praxis\u2014changes whose forms are many, but which all head in the same direction. In Gerhes\u2019s early staged photographs \u2013 which often feature the artist himself \u2013, everyday, seemingly banal scenes and objects blend with the instruments and concepts of high and mass culture. Instilling suspicion is an essential strategy of his works, which question and undermine the referential quality of their own relationship to reality.<\/p>\n

Darker in tone, the works he has created since the 2010s concentrate on transcultural phenomena, national identity and the collective consciousness. They are centred around the complex phenomena of construction, reconstruction and representation. These interests informed such exhibitions as\u00a0Neue Ordnung<\/em>\u00a0at Traf\u00f3 Gallery, which looked at conspiracy theories and the rituals of secret societies, and the 2015 show at Capa Centre,\u00a0Jelent\u00e9sfel\u00fcgyelet (Meaning Under Surveillance),<\/em>\u00a0which examined certain power practices. Gerhes\u2019s most recent project, a work in progress, is an extensive illustrated encyclopaedia of \u201cscientific metaphors\u201d:\u00a0Atlas<\/em>\u00a0concerns itself with how contemporary concepts and certainties of knowledge have eroded.<\/p>\n

How has the linguistic register of G\u00e1bor Gerhes\u2019s works changed over three decades, how have their forms transformed and congealed around centres, and what points of contact can be identified between them? Mai Man\u00f3 House\u2019s exhibition looks at these questions as it showcases a complex creative thought process.<\/p>\n

G\u00e1bor Gerhes\u00a0(1962\u2013) is a Munk\u00e1csy Mih\u00e1ly Prize winning visual artist, university educator, a regular member of the Sz\u00e9chenyi Academy of Literature and Arts. An external lecturer at the Media Design Programme of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design between 2006\u20132015, he has filled the same position at the Budapest Metropolitan University since 2010. A former Vice-President of the Studio of Young Artists\u2019 Association, he is a member of the Association of Hungarian Photographers, and of the Intermedia Section of the National Association of Hungarian Creative Artists. His work has been acknowledged repeatedly, with the scholarship of the Soros Foundation, the E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Scholarship of the Ministry of Culture, the Derkovits Scholarship, the Munk\u00e1csy Prize and numerous other prizes and distinctions. In 2004\u20132005 he worked in Recollettes with the French government\u2019s creative scholarship, in 2006 he was Kulturkontakt\u2019s Vienna scholarship awardee. In 2017\u20132019, he sat on the jury of the Association of Hungarian Photographers\u2019 photography scholarship, and in 2017\u20132018 he was first a member, and then chair, of the international jury for the Robert Capa Photography Grand Prize.<\/p>\n

His works can be found in public collections, like the Museum of Fine Arts, the Hungarian National Gallery, the Ludwig Museum \u2013 Museum of Contemporary Art, the Metropolitan Gallery \u2013 Kiscelli Museum, the Public Foundation for Modern Art in Duna\u00fajv\u00e1ros (ICA-D), the MODEM in Debrecen, the Hungarian Museum of Photography, Szombathely Gallery, the King St. Stephen Museum of Sz\u00e9kesfeh\u00e9rv\u00e1r, Vintage Gallery and the KOGART Foundation.<\/p>\n

He is featured in such private collections as the Irok\u00e9z Collection, the Soml\u00f3i-Spengler Collection, the Swiss H. Ringier Collection and the Kunsthaus Glarus, and one of the largest corporate collections, the German Stiftung DZ Bank AG \u2013 Frankfurt am Main. In Hungary the artist is represented by acb Gallery.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>
