TOP 10 – The most important Hungarian exhibitions of photography in 2020

21 • 02 • 12László Baki

We at Punkt.hu asked photography professionals to help us draw up a list of the best Hungarian exhibitions of photography in 2020—something we hope to turn into a tradition. We wanted to draw on sources as diverse as possible, to make the list truly authoritative.

It is probably fair to say last year was very unlike anything we have come to expect in recent times, because the measures with which the government responded to the pandemic forced great exhibitions to be closed prematurely (or not to be opened at all), and countless cultural events were cancelled.

In December, we asked the participants of the Photo Month event series, the members of the Association of Hungarian Photographers, the Studio of Young Photographers, and the Hungarian Society for the History of Photography, as well as the contributors of the sites, Punkt.hu and maimanohaz.blog.hu, to send us a ranked list of their favourite photo exhibitions in Hungary. 51 curators, gallery directors, photographers, specialists and educators responded, providing us with a combined list of 99 exhibitions. Here is the top 25.
