Több mint százmillió forintot várnak egyetlen fényképért a Sotheby’s őszi árverésén

A Sotheby’s szeptember 28-án kezdődő Classic Photographs és Contemporary Photographs elnevezésű őszi árverésein a fotótörténet ikonjainak képei kerülnek eladásra. Az aukción számos fontos magángyűjteményből – többek között a Dr. Joseph D. Lichtenberg és a Jay I. Kislak gyűjteményéből – a fotográfia legkeresettebb neveinek műveiből válogattak a szervezők.

Az árverésen szereplő képek közül Man Ray alkotásáért várják a legmagasabb összeget. A Calla Lilies című 1938-ban készült Man Ray kép aukciós értékét 300.000–500.000 dollárra becsülik a Sotheby’s szakemberei. Érdekesség, hogy az amerikai kritikus, Lewis Mumford, így írt a most 90-150 millió forintra becsült fotóról 1934-ben a New Yorkerben:

"Egy olyan fotográfus, aki intelligensen képes kezelni az emberi arcot, ne pazarolja az idejét a kalla liliomok fényképezésére, hogy azok úgy nézzenek ki, mint egy másodrangú akadémikus rajza."

Paul Outerbridge Jr. 1922-ben készült reklámfotójáért 250.000–350.000 dollárt, míg az 1969-ben készült, de 1980-ban nagyított Memphis című William Eggleston képért szintén 250.000–350.000 dollárt vár a Sotheby’s.

Amikor William Eggleston – aki az elmúlt öt évtizedben napjaink egyik legfontosabb fotográfusává vált – 1967-ben megérkezett Manhattanbe, egy bőröndöt vitt magával, amiben a Mississippi környékén készített színes felvételei voltak. New Yorkban Eggleston találkozott, majd összebarátkozott a jövő legendáival, és Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, valamint Lee Friedlander arra ösztönözték, hogy mutassa meg munkáit a Modern Művészetek Múzeumában dolgozó John Szarkowskinak, aki akkoriban az egyik legbefolyásosabb kurátor, kritikus, fotótörténész volt. Szarkowskit elbűvölték Eggleston képei, és 1976-ban önálló kiállítást rendezett színes felvételeiből.

Évtizedekkel később, 2012 márciusában egy Christie's aukción 36 nagyítását 5,9 millió dollárért adták el. Egy triciklikről készített fényképe – amely a William Eggleston's Guide című monográfia borítóján látható – a művész egyéni rekordja, hiszen egyetlen eladott példányáért 578.500 dollárt fizettek egy árverésen. Az, hogy ezt az eredményt sikerül-e felülmúlni, az október 5-én záró online aukció után derül majd ki.
